Liskeard Relay for Life has set a target of raising £30,000 at this year's event which takes place on Saturday, May 23.
Everyone is invited to join in the Liskeard Relay for Life event at Liskeard Rugby pitch (next to Lux Park Leisure Centre), which includes a fun day with events for all the family.
Starting at noon, admission is free and there are games, welly wanging, human hungry hippos, a host of stalls, competitions, live music, a bouncy castle, Superheroes, refreshments and much more – and, of course, it's all for a very good cause.
Liskeard Relay for Life, now in its eight year, has in that time raised more than £220,000 for Cancer Research UK and this year, to mark what is the 30th anniversary of the global movement of Relay for Life, has set its £30,000 target.
Relay for Life brings together people who celebrate, remember and, most importantly, are fighting back against cancer. The family fun day is part of the Relay for Life event, which takes place over a 24-hour period, and brings together teams of people to celebrate the fundraising which they have undertaken over the last 12 months.
Members of each team will take turns to walk around the track for the duration of the relay. All events are overnight as this marks the fact that cancer never sleeps.
The relay will begin with the inspiring Survivors' Lap of Honour. Cancer survivors will walk the first lap of the course, cheered and supported by the community. Together the event celebrates life and the efforts everyone is making to help beat cancer.
At the end of relay, everyone joins together for a final lap to celebrate their fundraising achievements and look back on an unforgettable experience.
This year's relay sees previous teams returning and also welcomes new teams to the arena.
One such team is Team Sasha, captained by Joff Lucas. Joff, from Liskeard, is a chief stoker on HMS Monmouth, currently based in Devonport. Team Sasha was formed in memory of Joff's fiancée Sasha who lost her life to cervical cancer. As part of the team's own challenge over the 24 hours Joff and a fellow team member are aiming to walk for the complete 24 hours (with natural breaks) in their firefighter's uniform!
Joff says: 'I want to do everything I possibly can to kick cancer into touch and stop people dying from this horrible disease.'
'I'm lucky that HMS Monmouth is in Plymouth at the moment as it gives me the opportunity to take part in this fantastic event and raise as much as I can for the research.'
Throughout the day, all team members participate in fun, fancy dress-themed laps. A new lap for 2015 is the ' Superheroes' lap when members of the public are invited to dress up as their favourite Superhero and join the relayers on the track. There is even a prize for the best dressed.
Jason Brockman, chair of the relay event, says: 'We hope to welcome as many people as possible to join in our celebrations and take part in our fun day.
'It's only by doing events like this that we will make a difference and find that cure that will beat all cancers.'
