CAMELFORD Town Council is going to look into the possibility of having a ‘park patrol’ initiative set up in Enfield Park.

The request was initially made by Cllr Stephen Bond, who said the initiative would work similarly to that of ‘Street Angels’ or ‘Street Pastors’.

He told the meeting on November 19: “It’s very much along the lines of Street Angels, which is basically where a volunteer group go out and about as a point of contact if there is any issue, and report back to the council. I think this could work very well in the park.”

Mayor, Claire Hewlett, said: “Do you mean they would be patrolling the park?”

Cllr Bond continued: “It’s a presence. There’s people out walking about the town daily. The lack of police presence (in Camelford) is an issue. It’s going to be at a low cost to the council to set this up, and to have someone in the summer months walking around would be a good thing. It would be like a neighbourhood watch, like a deterrent, should we say.”

Cllr Lauren Rathbone asked how the council would make the community aware of the patrol, and Cllr Bond said they would ‘make it known that someone is out there’.

But deputy mayor, Cllr Rob Rotchell, thought they would be ‘running before we can walk’. He added: “I think it’s a good idea. If you put it to the park working group, they can come up with a terms of reference.”

Agreeing, Cllr Shaw added: “I like the idea again, but they would really have to be visible with high-vis jackets with ‘park patrol’ on the backs.”

It was suggested that the idea be taken to the estate and properties committee, which was meeting that following Friday.
