POLICE are appealing for people who have had bogus callers to get in touch after what has been described as a ‘despicable act’ in Launceston.

It is after 85-year-old resident in the Hurdon area had a quantity of cash taken by a woman stating she was from the council, and she was inspecting the property.

Police said it occurred during the evening of last Monday, March 28. The woman was described as white, in her 30s, 5’02 tall with black hair, wearing a black overcoat and black gloves.

On being let in she wandered around the house entering different rooms.

Police said a short while after she had left it was discovered that a quantity of cash had been taken.

PS Aaron Ward wrote on Launceston Neighbourhood Team’s social media page: “The depths at which people will go to benefit themselves never ceases to amaze me!

“I’m sure you agree this was a despicable act and the person responsible needs to be identified and caught. Please can I ask if you had a similar caller let us know.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police quoting reference cr/20052/16.

Mr Ward added: “Whilst it’s too late for this victim of crime could I please ask that you have conversations with your elderly, vulnerable friends and relatives regarding bogus callers and actions they should take if they get callers to their doors which they are not expecting.

“The impact this type of crime has on the mental well being of a victim far outweighs that of losing items of property and I would hate someone else to be exploited in this way.”
