THE infant children at St Petroc’s School held a Mother’s Day Assembly on Friday March 4, celebrating the wonderful things that mothers, grandmothers and carers do.
The children — from the kindergarten, reception and year one departments of the school — wanted to show how special Mother’s Day is, conveying the very important role that a mother plays when caring for her child.
Following this was a cake sale, which was raising funds for the UK-based charity Refugee Action. This charity aims to give support and guidance to refugees, helping them to get their lives back on track.
This idea was conjured up by two Year 3 pupils, Beth and Obelia; the pair have shown how charitable and determined they are from such a young age, which has impressed the staff at St Petroc’s a great deal.
Headmaster Dan Thornburn said: “It was wonderful to see our hall full to bursting with parents enjoying the Mother’s Day assemblies. I was also delighted by the response to Beth and Obelia’s fundraising idea for Refugee Action.
“A huge part of what we try to instill in the children at St Petroc’s is being mindful of the needs of others, particularly those less fortunate than ourselves; this shows that the message is constantly getting through and I’m very proud of the amount the pupils managed to raise using their own initiative.”
As well as delicious cakes and treats being enjoyed by all, a remarkable £135 was raised in total for the charity, something of which the staff and pupils at St Petroc’s should be very proud.
