THE team behind Bude Friends of the Earth group have been hard at work recently, planting stage one of their ‘Incredible Edibles’ bed.
Located at the Crescent car park in Bude, the group began planting stage one of their new ‘Incredible Edibles’ bed, which the group will aim to use to provide local produce and promote its benefits to the planet.
Many hands made light work as weeds were removed and in their place were planted gooseberries, blackcurrants, strawberries, coriander, dill, yakon, three types of mint, winter savoury, rue, comfrey, red clover, rocket, mizuna, dwarf French beans and chives.
Simon Browning, a member of Bude Friends of the Earth, said: “The idea behind the community edibles is that the produce is for everyone to share, so people will hopefully come along and help themselves.
“With some of the more exotic items — like the yakon — we would like to show people how they can be used at events such as free tastings or cooking demos. The idea is to help show people that they can grow a variety of interesting and healthy food locally, so that they are not so dependent on imported produce from far away. This is good for our community and good for local resilience to climate change.”
