From Mrs M Gimlinge:

IN REPLY to the letter about the sculptures at Bude Canal (the 'Post', April 9).

I live very close to the canal and have spoken to the sculptor. It was planned to have another piece added. But it's fulfilling its purpose as a play area for children — I have seen the flat one used as a picnic area and so on. So I do not agree with the article 'shock, horror' etc.

However, as I am aged 75, my request is urgent. We need more benches for us older folk to rest on and enjoy our canal where there are often canoes to watch and, as you mention, wildlife, ducks etc.

As you continue toward the lock gates there is a new horseshoe shaped seat, past the Brasserie, not comfortable. Then three logs of wood, large, not comfortable. Further on there are three benches by the Castle tea room. On a Sunday on a fine day these are always occupied.

I do not have a car, I get tired walking so I find a bench is essential if I am to enjoy the town's beaches, walks and leisure. Please do give me your views. I am sure the millions spent on the canal must have included some form of seating.

Bude.
