JONATHAN Holt, chairman of Camelford Town Forum, counted more than 1,000 people at Sir James Smith's School, Camelford, who turned out to enjoy a stunning Fireworks Display on Saturday, December 6.

Lauren Sim, the town's Carnival Queen did the honours and pressed the plunger to start the fireworks.

The weather was ideal and allowed Thomas Bricknell of Celebration Fireworks to stage a phenomenal display, described by everyone as the best yet. Then Santa Claus gave out flashing batons to the bigger children and illuminated windmills to the younger visitors and, led as usual by Camelford Town Band, with the Carnival Queen and her attendants bringing up the rear, the procession walked through the town to the entrance of Enfield Park.

There, they joined even more people in the town and Brian Lush, Town Mayor, thanked the Forum Fireworks Committee and the Lighting Committee for their work throughout the year, saying that they demonstrated what could be achieved with teamwork.

There followed a countdown leading to Lauren Sim switching on the Christmas Lights. There were gasps as the lights came on — they are stunning and everyone is very proud of them and the work the Lighting Committee has done.

New LED bulbs this year, partly funded by Camelford Town Council, will ensure that the electricity bill is kept to a minimum.

A spokesman said: "Camelford wants everyone to come and enjoy the Christmas feeling in the town."

The evening ended with the Camelford Town Band playing Christmas carols, and mince pies contributed by Camelford Co-op were given out to the crowds.
