The service began with a two minute silence in remembrance of the Queen, which was followed by an address from the Deputy Lieutenant of Cornwall, Simon Sherrard. Mayor of Bude-Stratton, Cllr Amanda Tame, then read the Proclamation in English, and Jacqui Heard repeated it in Cornish.
The event concluded with one verse of the National Anthem and three cheers for the new King.
Mayor Amanda Tame said: “Our sadness at this time is shared by people across the globe, as we remember with affection and gratitude the lifetime of extraordinary dedication and service given by our longest reigning Monarch.
“It was lovely to see so many members of the community coming together at this historic moment, to thank our Queen and herald the new reign of His Majesty, King Charles III.”
“I’d like to thank all of those who helped make this occasion so memorable, with very little notice – the Bude Branch of the Royal British Legion, Bude Metric Brass, Jacqui Heard for her Cornish expertise, the Deputy Lieutenant of Cornwall for his attendance, and our incredibly hardworking Town Clerk,” Mayor Amanda Tame added.
The Proclamation in Bude, which took place at 6pm, followed the reading of the Proclamation by the High Sheriff of Cornwall in Truro earlier in the day.
Deputy Lieutenant of Cornwall, Simon Sherrard, explained: “In an age where modern methods of communication convey news around the globe in an instant, the Proclamation is no longer the means by which people learn for the first time that they have a new Monarch.
“Today, however, is one of the first occasions for Cornwall to have an opportunity to come together to reflect on the moment in our nation’s history when the reign of our longest-serving Monarch came to an end, and our new Sovereign succeeded.”
There is a book of condolence in the foyer of the Parkhouse Centre, Bude, for members of the community to leave a message should they wish.
