A CORNISH community centre and a family support group are the latest winners of funding from a Launceston-based housebuilder, Persimmon Homes Cornwall.
Persimmon Homes Cornwall has chosen to support Blisland Community Association with a £900 donation, and Hugs from Henry in Plymouth with £1,000.
Blisland Community Association is a volunteer-led cause in the heart of the village that supplies visitors with a shop, café and post office — and with Persimmon’s donation they will refurbish the centre’s kitchen.
They also received some very special visitors earlier this month in the shape of Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, during their three-day tour of the region.
Beth Cauldwell, from the Blisland Community Association, said: “To receive this donation from Persimmon Homes is great news because we have some immediate works that needed to be carried out in the café kitchen.
“Many of our customers are elderly and rely on the shop — and without it life would be very lonely for many elderly folk in this remote Cornish community.
“To receive a visit from Charles and Camilla was unbelievable for everyone at Blisland Community Association. To meet them and hear their kind words about our cause was truly a once in a lifetime event.”
The national match-funding programme seeks to support groups and charities working to improve the quality of life for local people.
Hugs from Henry, based in Plymouth, supports families that have been affected by childhood cancer and will use their £1,000 donation to work with families across the region.
Kim Thorne, from the charity, said: “We really can’t thank Persimmon enough for their kind donation of £1,000.
“The Hugs from Henry team aims to grow the charity to be able to support hundreds of families who are forced to deal with these horrible circumstances across the South West and throughout the UK.
“We’ve held many events to raise some funds for the group including golf days, barbecues and quiz nights, so we’re thrilled Persimmon has been able to step in and back our cause further.”
Daniel Heathcote, director in charge at Persimmon Homes Cornwall, said: “As a company we are committed to supporting the groups and charities that make a real difference to the lives of local people in the areas in which we build.
“Both Blisland Community Centre and Hugs from Henry are very worthy causes and we’re thrilled to be in a position to support them.
“Community Champions has handed over £1-million to good causes across the UK and it’s great to see so many charities and community groups benefitting.
“Persimmon Homes Cornwall has had a fantastic response to its Community Champions scheme and it is always a tricky task to pick our winners each month.
“If applicants were unsuccessful last month, we urge them to visit the Persimmon Homes website and to try again and hopefully they will become our next Community Champion.”
