VILLAGERS in Newland held a street party to celebrate the 400th anniversary of a local landmark.
Newland Almshouses were built in 1615 by local benefactor William Jones – who was also responsible for building Monmouth School for Boys.
To mark the occasion a street party was held with tables and chairs for some 150 people lining the road.
Food and drink was provided by the Co-op in Coleford and the event was also supported by Newland Parish Council to enable history boards to be made.
The street party was followed by a history talk by local expert Christie Arno and a barbecue was held during the evening.
Jane Bentley, one of the organisers, said: "We were thrilled with how it went on Saturday. Around 150 guests came and enjoyed the afternoon tea and barbecue later in the evening.
"The history talk by Christie Arno was popular.
"We met new faces as well as familiar ones from the village and everyone helped by bringing home-made cakes along.
"The weather was always threatening to spoil the day but it just about held off and we partied in the street all evening."
