THERE was strong competition in the horse section at this year’s Camelford Show with a good mix of different breeds and ages.

The firm ground gave excellent showing conditions and the judges were given a tough task of choosing the winners in a variety of classes from heavy horses to miniatures, young handlers to show jumpers.

Among the contenders was Rhiannon Carter, 14, from Bowithick, Camelford, who came away with a handful of rosettes thanks to her 12 year old homebred British spotted pony x thoroughbred ‘Moonspark Tatanka Royale’.

Rhiannon is relatively new to the showing scene, having previously only competed at pony club level, but she received a number of first and second rosettes and the ‘local pony’ award in the ridden spotty class.

It is no wonder however, that Rhiannon’s pony did so well as her mother was a racehorse. Rhiannon said: “I have really enjoyed competing and am looking forward to the next class.”

Fenella Watton-Walling from Trengune near Warbstow also had a successful day and was delighted to have won best show pony up to 148cm as well as the best local pony award in the same category with her mare, a British Riding Pony called Tynacks Bambi.

When asked what her favourite part of showing was, Fenella said she most enjoyed the judging process: “I love taking part and riding my pony in front of the judges because I know she has got so much potential and I love when they recognise that.”

Fenella had three more classes to take part in but said she was pleased to have won so early on in the day. She had previously taken part and won at Woolsery Show and said she now had her sights set on winning at Holsworthy & Stratton Agricultural Show later this month.
