GRANTS were handed out by the town council to help fund groups in Holsworthy who benefit the community.
At the full council meeting of the Holsworthy Town Council on Wednesday, June 1, presentations of grants were made for the financial year 2016/17.
Four groups of representatives attended the council meeting to receive their grant cheques from Mayor Jon Hutchings. They were; the Neighbourhood Watch, Holsworthy Cricket Club, Holsworthy Museum and Holsworthy Rural Community Transport Ltd.
The mayor welcomed all representatives to the meeting and invited each group to make a short speech on behalf of their organisation.
The first to receive a grant cheque of £25 was the Neighbourhood Watch. The representative said: “On behalf of the chairman of the Neighbourhood Watch I would like to thank the councillors here today for this grant cheque. It will help towards our annual running costs and the development of certain aspects of the group.
“We have a website and email but not everyone has one of those and the money will help us develop this. But once again thank you for your donation.”
The second grant cheque of £200 was awarded to two representatives from the Holsworthy Cricket Club, they said: “Firstly we would like to thank the councillors for the money. It really is the case of every little helps, especially with little clubs like ours.
“We have been trying to set up a youth organisation in Holsworthy for cricket and the money will help go towards it.”
Grant cheques of £500 each were presented to representatives of Holsworthy Museum and one representative form Holsworthy Rural Community Transport.
The Holsworthy Museum representatives said: “On behalf of all the volunteers we would like to thank the councillors for their generous and continued support for the museum.
“We are a part of the town’s history but really need to be able to embrace the modern technologies. We will use this money to help update our computer systems and try to enhance the visitors’ experiences in the museum.”
The Holsworthy Rural Community Transport representative said: “On behalf of the transport team I want to say thank you to the council for this grant. We have around 750 clients in Holsworthy and the surrounding areas who use us to travel to and from important appointments and events.
“For example many use us as medical transport to get them to and from hospital appointments and others use us for social reasons or for requirements like shopping trips etcetera.
“This money will help us continue to provide the service that we do and we thank you for your support.”
Two groups who were also to benefit from a town council grant were unable to attend the council meeting on Wednesday, June 1, but cheques will be sent to both the Citizens Advice Bureau and the Holsworthy Link Centre.
