Dog fouling in Holsworthy is an issue which town councillors receive many complaints about so news that Torridge District Council was intending to bring in more stringent dog control orders to replace the current system of byelaws was welcomed by councillors at their meeting on Wednesday, March 4.

The order would require people in control of a dog to remove faeces deposited by their dog immediately and will apply to all land in Torridge which is open to the air and to which the public are entitled or permitted to have access.

The current penalty is £50 but town and district councillor Richard Brown said patrols were to be stepped up in Holsworthy, fines would be "tough" and non-payment could lead to a crown court appearance and a criminal record.

Meanwhile councillors urged anyone witnessing a dog

fouling to contact the animal welfare officer (telephone 01237 428810) giving as many details as possible of the offending owner and dog.
