THE sun was shining on May 30, for the 45th visit of a party of 54 people from Holsworthy’s twin town Aunay-sur-Odon.

On their arrival at noon a civic reception was laid on for the visitors by Holsworthy Town Council. After some light refreshments and welcoming drinks Alan Harris, president of the twinning association, congratulated the mayor on her appointment — this being her first official task — and thanked her and the council for the formal welcome.

He invited representatives of the council to join the association on next year’s visit to Aunay. The mayor of Holsworthy Joanne Heaven then welcomed the guests and recalled that she had visited Aunay on a school exchange many years ago organised by the late Brian Hughes. She wished them all a pleasant visit.

Following a period of catching up with old friends and renewing acquaintances the party dispersed to their various hosts’ homes for a relaxing afternoon and evening.

On Friday morning at 9.15am everyone gathered for a trip to the Cornwall at War Museum where a very interesting three hours was spent looking around the various displays. Light refreshments were served and then on to Boscastle for lunch and sightseeing.

Everyone went back to their host families’ homes again for a quick change and then it was onto the evening reception in the Memorial Hall, suitably decorated with bunting and flags in red, white and blue.

The president of Aunay-sur-Odon’s association Pierre Cool gave a speech thanking everyone for the weekend and the hospitality received. Rob Moores, Holsworthy’s chairman, suitably replied.

After sharing a meal together the tables were pushed back and ‘Mist the Boat Ceilidh’ band provided the music for dancing. This was very well received by the visitors and with great humility everyone had a go at learning the various dances.

Saturday was a day for free time with the family until 4.30pm when a barbecue was organised in Stanhope Park and the visitors were invited to learn how to bowl with thanks to Holsworthy Bowling Club for providing both tutors and the necessary bowls. The weather was perfect and the event was again much appreciated by all who took part.

Sadly, all good things have to come to an end and 8am Sunday morning saw the bus leaving Holsworthy with 54 tired, but happy visitors returning to France.

If anyone would like to visit Aunay on next year’s trip, anyone in Holsworthy and the surrounding district is welcome to join the association. For more information contact the chairman Rob on 01409 254192 or the secretary Eileen Harris on 01288 352544.
