HOLSWORTHY Town Council has recommended that the square be resurfaced over two days in June.

Last month councillors agreed with a proposal by Devon County Council's Highways Department that the square should be resurfaced using black tarmac and white lining to denote parking bays.

During Wednesday's meeting, February 4, councillors were asked to consider whether the square should be closed for resurfacing for two days or five nights.

The Town Clerk, Mrs Clare Dalley, informed councillors that Highways could not guarantee that, if the resurfacing is done over five nights, from 7pm to 11pm, that the square would be open for pedestrians and motorists during the day.

She had spoken to the chairman of Holsworthy Chamber of Trade, Mrs Beccy Johns, who said they would prefer the work was carried out over the two days.

The Mayor, Cllr David Smith proposed that the council follow the Chamber of Trade's suggestion and the work be carried out over two days on Monday and Tuesday, June 8 and 9. All councillors voted in favour.

While discussing the Square, Cllr Elizabeth Squire requested that the Clerk ask Highways to fill in the 'enormous' pot holes in the square.

Also, Cllr Smith felt the square should be gritted when the Highways gritter was out in the town. "This morning the square was treacherous," he said.
