THE SACRIFICES of many in numerous conflicts, old and new, were remembered on Sunday in services and parades throughout the 'Post' district. Record crowds were reported as the casualties in Afghanistan reminded those who had forgotten to pay tribute to those who gave life or limb to help preserve our freedom — those who gave their tomorrows for our todays.
The young men of Holsworthy, who left the town to fight for their country and did not return from battle, were respectfully remembered last Sunday afternoon in the annual Remembrance parade and service.
More than 230 people, a high proportion of them young people, lined up in the Square and on a word of command from Warrant Officer Ray Hawkins and led by the Town Band, marched to Bodmin Street Methodist Church.
Among the veterans was 85-year-old Ernest Eaton, a former marine, who landed in Normandy on D-Day and spent the remainder of the war in the Pacific. He was assisted in a wheelchair by 19-year-old Trooper James Wortley of the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment, a formerMayor's cadet who was home on leave.
The service was led by the minister, Rev John Henry, assisted by Father Neil Quirk of the Roman Catholic Church and the rector, Rev Michael Reynolds who preached the sermon. Major Mike Johns and Sue Ivey of the Royal British Legion read the lessons and the organist was Andrew Fishleigh.
After the service the parade marched to the war memorial, now in pristine condition after a recent clean, where, watched by a large crowd, the Portreeve, Russell Dymond, read the role of honour, 36 names from World War I and 27 from World War II, members of the town band sounded the last post and two minutes' silence were observed.
Then wreaths were laid by representatives of a large number of organisations in the town, and the band played the National Anthem. Finally, the parade marched back to the Square where WO Ray Hawkins thanked everyone, especially the young people, for taking part.
