FOLLOWING the recent debate at April's Holsworthy Town Council meeting, it was established that the decision whether or not to remove Holsworthy Pannier

Market's duplication policy should be discussed at the full Markets Liaison Committee.

The removal of the policy would allow more than two stalls selling similar items to trade at the market.

As a result, this was discussed at the Markets Liaison Committee meeting on April 21 with members of the town council, Chamber of Trade and representatives for market traders in attendance.

At the meeting, the report explained that 'the market manager would not swamp the market with traders, but use his discretion' in regards to who he allowed on to the market.

Concern was raised by a representative of the market traders who believed the regular stall holders were only just making it worthwhile to attend and might decide to leave if new people were introduced.

The report explained that a representative from the Chamber of Trade commented: 'The businesses in the Square had no control over who began trading and possible competition. If it meant duplicating some of the stalls, it must be so. We must try to bring more people into the town to a larger market.'

The market manager said he had several traders waiting to come onto the market who would sell fruit and vegetables, plants, jewellery and bags.

Cllr David Smith proposed that the removal of the duplication policy should be waived and is left to the market manager to use his discretion about which traders to allow on.

Councillors voted unanimously in favour at the full town council meeting on May 5.
