CLLR Richard Brown was nominated and elected as Mayor Designate for Holsworthy for 2010/11 at the full town council meeting held on Wednesday, April 7.
Before the decision was made, it was proposed by Cllr David Smith that the decision for Mayor Designate should be put forward at May's meeting. He said: "A lot of things need to be sorted out in the next month."
However, current mayor for Holsworthy, Elizabeth Squire, explained: "For the stability of the council, if we know of someone who wants to be mayor we should consider this, else we will be in limbo for the next month."
Cllr Louis Latty suggested that Cllr Squire
carried on for another term to see the council through the "awkward time." In response to this, Cllr Squire explained that she wasn't prepared to carry on for another term after being mayor for three years.
Cllr Martin Heslip suggested Cllr Smith take on the role of mayor, however with no support from councillors on the proposal, Cllr Richard Kennedy proposed that Cllr Richard Brown should take on the role of Mayor Designate.
Cllr Brown was previously mayor around six years ago and served for two terms in the position.
With the majority of councillors supporting this idea, the proposal for Cllr Brown to become Mayor Designate for 2010/11 was carried and voted for. Councillors welcomed Cllr Brown as Mayor Designate.
This then led to nominations for Deputy Mayor Designate. Current Holsworthy Deputy Mayor Rebecca Buckingham nominated Cllr Richard Kennedy to take on the role. The proposal received nine votes for and two abstentions, therefore Cllr Kennedy will be Deputy Mayor Designate for 2010/11.
Cllr Brown commented to the 'Post': "It is a great honour for my colleagues to give me this role. I never expected to be mayor again it was a long time ago that I was mayor for the town.
"I will endeavour to do my best as part of a team and in support of my colleagues we will pull together and face challenges that the town faces and will face in the next year."
