Following the resignation of Cllr Pauline Ede, a Holsworthy Town Council by-election was held last Thursday (December 4).
Bruce Priddy, the landlord of the Golden Fleece, was elected with 269 votes and former Town Clerk, Martin Prentice received 96 votes.
After the returning officer, Linda Kelly, had announced the result, Mr Priddy said he was delighted and promised to serve the people of Holsworthy to the best of his ability.
Only 17.5 per cent of the electorate voted and some people expressed their concern that not enough was done to make the public aware of the by-election.
After voting in the Memorial Hall last Thursday morning, resident Richard Hutchings said he felt polling cards should have been issued to every elector. He said he had phoned Torridge District Council to find out where the polling station would be and they had taken a long time before coming up with the answer.
