MONEY believed to be allocated for community gym facilities in Holsworthy could be spent on equipment elsewhere by Torridge District Council, it has been revealed.
Holsworthy Town Council has been told by Torridge District Council (TDC) that it is not in control of funding acquired from Section 106 Agreements, as previously believed. As a result, the town is unlikely to benefit from new gym equipment. Instead the money might be spent by the district council in one of its leisure centres.
Cllr Martin Prentice reported to councillors at the meeting on February 1, that himself and the town clerk had taken part in a "frosty" meeting with TDC solicitor Ken Miles recently.
Cllr Prentice explained that since re-joining the council there are three 106 agreements.
He was under the belief that when a 106 was triggered, the money was transferred from TDC to Holsworthy, but he was told this was not the case.
"The money belongs to Torridge and they own it, however an agreement has allowed town and parish councils to take on the role."
Cllr Prentice asked Mr Miles why three lots of transfers had been made into the town council's bank account, if this was the case. He was informed that they had been made incorrectly and it was a mistake.
