HOLSWORTHY Community College Year 11 pupils went to Somerset for the second round of the U16 English Schools’ FA Premier League Small Schools’ Cup on Tuesday, October 18.
This year, instead of Sir John Colfox Academy coming to Holsworthy’s home turf, they were playing at their home ground, travelling nearly two hours to get there. This was definitely a grudge match, due to the previous encounter when Holsworthy Community College came out on top 3-0 in last year’s competition.
Holsworthy started off well going 1-0 up from Max Mcdonald’s half volley into the top of the goal. Shortly after Ben Furber received the ball and scored a second goal: 2-0. Sir John Colfox soon caught them on a counter attack and scored: 2-1. Holsworthy then won a corner; Ollie Moores got his head on it and it was another goal to HCC: 3-1. The ref blew the whistle for half time.
Soon after the break, Max received the ball, ran on and finished the job: 4-1 to Holsworthy. However, the opposition quickly hit them with a counter attack and slotted the ball in to the net, again, in a one on one: 4-2. With the game nearing its end the boys pushed for a final goal. Will Harris took another opportunity and put the ball past the keeper with an amazing pass to Ben Furber and the game finished 5-2; another victory to Holsworthy!
Holsworthy’s Man of the Match was Max McDonald.
Steve Vanstone, head of PE, said:?“The current U16 team have been a real credit to the college, reaching the later rounds in the English Schools and consistently reaching the County Cup semi-final and beyond. I’m not sure we will ever see a year group have so much success in football when you consider they have beaten huge schools compared to ourselves, which include Ivybridge, Paignton, Tiverton and Bideford to name a few. We are now looking forward to the third round draw of the English Schools which could see us travel as far as the Midlands or London, so personally I am hoping for a home draw!
