AN EPIDEMIC of garden gnome thefts in Holsworthy and the impact of a new Tesco store on the town were two of the topics chosen last week by students of Holsworthy Community College, one of more than 1,000 schools across the UK to contribute to the BBC's School Report News Day.

During the previous weeks students from Year 9 had been investigating seven local, national and international issues, including their world exclusive on gnome thefts, a badger cull and tuition fees. But last Thursday, March 15, the college library was turned into a newsroom where, throughout the day, students became journalists and researched breaking news stories ready to file them for a deadline at 4pm.
