A LIVE show celebrating the relationship between horses and humans to be staged at Duchy College Stoke Climsland will be the culmination of a community project four years in the making.

Starting out with the question of why this special bond runs so deep, creative director Kate Walker, composer Judy Whitlock and writer Jayne Newton Chance explored the theme with some fellow horse-lovers whose feelings and stories became songs.

Participants in open workshops have also contributed their own words, music, drawings, printing and sculpture. The result is Heaven’s Thunder, a heartfelt and joyous tribute to the love, friendship, loyalty and awe humans experience in the presence of horses.

Writer Jayne Newton Chance said: “This project has been a truly collaborative enterprise. Everyone in the show has contributed creatively, especially our dedicated core, who have been with us since the very first workshop. It has brought people together from all kinds of backgrounds across scattered communities in Cornwall and over the border into Plymouth.

“We’ve had a shared love - horses - and a shared purpose and we’ve had a ball. Like so many other shows, ours has been postponed twice due to Covid. We’ve had to be flexible. But now everyone is raring to go in October. I can’t wait for the extraordinary talents of the performers, horses and riders to be showcased. It’s not often people in rural Cornwall have access to something like this show. It’s going to be very special.”

The show includes 16 horses and riders, three choirs, a samba band, dancers and acrobats, all performing to specially composed music. There will be a festival atmosphere and audiences are invited to come early to enjoy hot food, a bar, craft stalls and an exhibition.

Heaven’s Thunder is at Duchy College, Stoke Climsland, Callington on Sunday October 3, with a matinee at 2pm and evening show 7pm. Gates will be open two hours before the show.
