A funeral home in Launceston is celebrating its two-year milestone of providing the local community with comfort, connection, and creative ways to talk about grief – all over a cup of tea and a slice of cake.
Run by Co-op Funeralcare Launceston colleagues Katie Willing and Kenzie Watson, the monthly bereavement support group meets at St Thomas Church Hall on Riverside. Sessions take place on the third Wednesday of each month, with the next scheduled for Wednesday, June 18 at 7pm.
The group was set up after Katie – funeral director – and Kenzie – funeral arranger – noticed a lack of local support options for people dealing with loss. After speaking to members of the church and the wider community, it became clear there was a need for a space where people could talk openly about their experiences of grief – and meet others who understand what they’re going through.
Katie said: “We wanted to create something informal and friendly – a place where people feel comfortable to talk, reflect, and connect with others who understand.”
The sessions are relaxed and welcoming, with creative monthly activities such as memory jar making, wreath making, poetry sharing, conversational Jenga and even decorating Christmas cakes.
The group also holds outdoor walks at Roadford Lake and has enjoyed outings including attending a local festival to pick their own lavender, hosting a bingo fundraiser and having their first Christmas meal together.
“It’s been over two years now, and we’re still welcoming new faces every month” added Katie. “Some people come just once or twice and others become regulars, but everyone is met with a warm smile, a hot drink and a supportive space.”
The group is free to attend, and no booking is required. For more information, contact Co-op Funeralcare Launceston [email protected] or 01566 775740.
