THE UK has recorded the highest single-day death toll from coronavirius.

The total number of hospital deaths from the illness now stands at 7,097, a rise of 938 in the last 24-hour period, according to the latest Department of Health figures.There have been 6,483 deaths in England, 296 in Scotland, 245 in Wales and 73 in Northern Ireland.The number of positive coronavirus tests carried out rose by 5,492 to 60,733.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is said to be ’responding to treatment' in St Thomas’ Hospital in London, where he is being treated in intensive care for coronavirus.

His condition is described as ’stable’.Meanwhile, UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced £750m for frontline charities across the UK, including hospices and charities helping domestic abuse victims. Mr Sunak said £360m will be directly allocated by government departments, while £370m will go to smaller charities, including through a grant to the National Lottery Community Fund, and £60m of that will go to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Chancellor also promised to match donations to the National Emergencies Trust as part of the BBC’s Big Night In fundraiser later this month ‘pound for pound’, with a minimum pledge of £20m.
