ON SUNDAY, January 13, a ‘save a life day’ was organised at Morwenstow Community Centre by Sharon Olde and Sarah Bryant.

This event is held yearly since the installation of an AED outside the centre.

In 2015, a young local man had a cardiac arrest and it was only the quick and effective response of CPR, which saved his life until the ambulance service arrived and applied a defibrillator, which restarted his heart.

Approximately 35 people attended the training day at Morwenstow.

Stephen Matthews, paramedic for NHS South West, explained the use of a defibrillator, which was followed by Jay’s Aim, a non-profit organisation, who are helping young hearts through promoting cardiac screening, awareness and CPR and defibrillator training. Approximately 12 people between the age of 14 and 35 die each week through cardiac arrest.

This was a free event, where refreshments were available and donations of £155.10 went to the wonderful work of Jay’s Aim.
