SIGHT loss charity, iSightCornwall, brought its community roadshow to Launceston Town Hall recently.
The event, one of many being held across Cornwall, gave local blind and partially sighted people the chance to try out different gadgets and devices that make everyday tasks easier.
There were also specialist staff on hand to give advice about low vision aids and sight loss support.
Terri Rosnau-Ward, chief executive of iSightCornwall said: “We understand the life-changing impact that a visual impairment can have which is why our services are designed to help people lead more active and independent lives.
“With almost 200 clients in Launceston and the surrounding areas it was nice to see a few familiar faces at the event and meet some new people too.”
Lynda Thomas, low vision advisor at iSightCornwall, will be back in Launceston on July 31 to launch a new low vision clinic at Specsavers. The low vision clinic is a free service, by appointment only, for people whose eye conditions cannot be improved with prescription glasses or surgery.
Following an assessment, low vision aids such as magnifiers, solar shields and MaxTV glasses can be taken away on a free long-term loan.
The clinic will be held every six to eight weeks in Launceston to make it easier for people to get an appointment closer to home. iSightCornwall currently runs five other low vision clinics in Truro, Helston, Bodmin, St Austell and Penzance.
Anyone wishing to book a free assessment will need a referral from their optician or eye hospital consultant.
Julia Peggs, retail director at Specsavers said: “Specsavers Launceston are delighted to be working with iSightCornwall and are looking forward to welcoming their patients.”
iSightCornwall is the only dedicated centre of resource for the estimated 22,000 people living with sight loss in Cornwall.
The community drop-in events and new low vision clinic are just two of the steps the charity is taking to reach more of those people.
