TORRIDGE District Council would like to consult the public on introducing a public spaces protection order (PSPO) to help tackle irresponsible dog ownership at specific areas within its district.

The order will cover dog fouling, dogs off leads causing a nuisance to others, and dogs in vulnerable areas such as children’s play parks and on a local ‘Blue Flag’ beach. A PSPO is a new measure, created by the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, that replaces the current dog control orders by the council in 2013.

The new order will continue to ensure that the law-abiding majority of the community can use and enjoy public spaces safely. As with the previous legislation, the new order will be enforced by authorised council officers, who may serve fixed penalty notices or prosecute those individuals who breach the order.

The council has drafted its order and invites comments and suggestions in this six-week period from anyone who lives, works or visits the district and areas concerned.
