THIS game on the Mennaye Field was split into 3x12 minute segments. Some of the squad were missing due to sickness and other commitments, we only had 11 players.
Launceston went on the attack from the off. Ross Gorman made great inroads into the Penzance 22, after good work from the forwards, Kyle Tozer scored the first try.
More pressure by Launceston's backs and forwards set up Ben Jewell on a great run for the line, he was held up close to the line, turned and popped the ball as they have done in which enabled Kyle Tozer to score his second try. At this stage, it was all Launceston and from a tapped penalty, Ross Gorman powered his way over the line for try number three.
This ended the first segment of play, the Launceston lads were 15 points ahead.
The second session got underway and the boys allowed Penzance to play. They were sloppy and guilty of missing easy tackles, which led Penzance to score two tries in quick succession. This shook the boys back into play and this proved to be the closest Penzance got to their try line for the rest of the match.
From this point some great rugby was played. Toby May, Joe Vanstone and Marc Poad made some great runs with Cameron Lovell ripping and driving through their defence and it wasn't long before they scored again. Setting up a ruck on the halfway line, Kyle picked up the ball and raced from there to complete his hat-trick.
During the final section of the match, it was obvious the boys were tiring although they were still pressuring Penzance, Charlie Nicoll, Luke Couch and George Striplin ran well with the ball in hand. Marc Poad and Luke Wickett offered great support. The final try was scored by Ben Jewell, well deserved as he gives 100 per cent on the pitch.
Man of the match, as usual, a very hard decision to make, has gone to our resident Pocket Rocket Cameron Lovell who never fails to amaze us with his relentless effort. Get an early night Cam!!
All the boys played well and we are lucky to have a motivated, enthusiastic and eager team, still undefeated in Cornwall. Keep it up lads, the Cornwall Cup is around the corner!
