CHRISTMAS started at the United Church, in Tregadillett with a happy, boisterous, noisy and colourful occasion.
The concert, given by Johnny Cowling, lived up to all its expectations. Having returned from ten days entertaining in London, Mr Cowling said it was ‘good to be home again’. A mixture of his songs of many styles, and all mixed with a great deal of humour, meant enjoyment for everyone. The audience participation is always a vital and necessary part of the show, and they all did just that.
Sarah Vinson, church secretary, welcomed everyone and announced that donations from the evening’s funds will be made to four charities; League of Friends of Launceston Hospital, Motor Neurone Disease, St Petroc’s for the homeless in Cornwall, and the Alzheimers Society. These presentations will be made at the church’s community Christmas carol service.
A very successful raffle was run by Eric and Ann Shute. As always, nothing happens at the church without food being involved. For this occasion, pasties and cups of tea and coffee answered all the needs.
An extra, unannounced, presentation took place when parish council chairman Eric Shute reminded people of the work done by John Andrew for the parish. As well as being a councillor for over 25 years, he had been the leader behind the greatly successful village’s ‘Fun Day’. In the 11 years of its existence, it had raised over £44,000 for the village and parish. It seemed fitting that the new stage, in use that evening, was supported by the final payment from those funds. The presentation included a certificate recording his works and included some photographs of his involvement. In his response, John said that all that was achieved could not have happened without the support of a great number of people.
Several people were asking after the event whether it was annual. Whilst that may be unlikely, already plans are being made to repeat it, in two years time. As is usual, a first-class presentation added to the atmosphere of the United Church and created a memorable event.
