HOLSWORTHY Hamlets are gearing up to mark the occasion by lighting a beacon in honour of the Queen to celebrate her 90th birthday.
Holsworthy Hamlets Parish Council has organised a beacon lighting event for Thursday, April 21 to be held at the New Agricultural Centre on Newmarket Road.
All council’s in England have been invited to join in the celebrations and light their own beacon at the same time — with timings given under the confirmation of the Queen’s Pageantmaster in early March.
The event is free to all residents of Holsworthy and the surrounding areas and there will be charity collections throughout the evening on behalf of the Lions.
The beacon itself will be crafted out of wood donated by local suppliers and constructed by a local builder.
As part of the celebrations there will be a few activities the public can join in. Before the event there will be an art competition open to local schools — the two winners of which will get to light the beacon on the day.
There will be one winner each from two age categories, primary school age and secondary school age.
Pupils can create an image on the subject of the Queen’s 90th Birthday or Beacons and Bonfires.
All the artwork submitted from schools will be displayed in the Holsworthy Library and Memorial Hall.
Shortlisting of the entries will be done by Holsworthy Hamlets Parish Council and from this two winners will be chosen — the hope is that a local resident, who is 94-years-old, will choose the final winners.
The winners of the art competition will then be invited to light the beacon, with adult supervision, during the event.
The event will also feature refreshments at a barbecue supplied by the Lions, and a bar whose supplier is yet to be confirmed.
The entertainment for the evening will include local bands, showcasing the young local talent, and music from the town band — other acts are yet to be confirmed.
Support has been received from local businesses, the fire brigade and community policing.
