PLANS to convert the former St John ambulance hall in Camelford into two dwellings have been met with caution by town councillors.

The application, submitted by Mr Gary Stone, seeks permission for the conversion and change of use of the building.

Last year the Post reported that St John had put the redundant building up for sale. The town council initially showed an interest in buying it to retain it as a community asset, but after further investigation decided against the purchase.

At last week’s meeting of the town council, concern was raised about the size of the dwellings.

Cllr Andy Shaw said the front property, a two bedroom dwelling would be 58 square metres in size and the second, a three bedroom, around 20 sq metres larger.

Parking provision was also thought to be a problem. Two parking spaces have been designated, but Cllr Shaw said the minimum needed is one-and-a-half, preferably two spaces per property.

“It’s very bijoux,” he added.

Mayor Cllr Robert Rotchell said Camelford had a plethora of two bedroom properties, most of which are significantly bigger than what is proposed.

Cllr Shaw proposed that the council reject the application, as it is overdevelopment of the site and unacceptable in its present form.

Cllr Sue Elford, deputy mayor seconded the proposal and all councillors voted in favour.

The final decision will be made by Cornwall Council.
