CAMELFORD Town Council considered a grant request for £1,600 from Camelford Hall at its meeting on June 19.
Mayor Kirsty Ferguson said each year the council budgets for a grant of £1,200 to help with the running of the public toilets in the hall, on Clease Road.
The additional £400 has been requested to provide a baby-changing table.
Cllr Peter Guesford said: “I’ve got real problems with this.”
But Cllr Aaron Dawe said: “I personally think it’s a wonderful service they provide. It’s very important for us to have toilets at that end of the town.”
Cllr Rob Rotchell explained that Camelford Hall is run by trustees, a single body made up of people from a number of organisations.
If there are no trustees, the town council is obliged to take over the running of the hall.
“The donation we make is to keep the toilets open. We don’t contribute to anything else through that donation. The Camelford Hall toilets are kept open for the public.”
He suggested that if they want a donation for something else, they could submit an additional request.
Cllr Andy Shaw said the town council’s standing orders state that they can give 10% of a capital project, so if the hall requires £400, the council could consider a grant of 10% of the amount.
Cllr Rotchell proposed the council gives the budgeted grant of £1,200 and advise the hall trustees to submit a separate application. This was seconded by Cllr Shaw and all councillors voted in favour.
