A NAME, with a distinctively Cornish ring to it, has been chosen for a new development in Camelford.
The naming was discussed by councillors at the October 20 town council meeting after a letter was received from Samuel Harding of Ocean Housing, the company developing the land on the site of the former primary school.
The name ‘Fair Park Close’ was previously suggested by the town council but the developers responded, saying they would like a Cornish name and this suggestion did not translate well.
At the meeting, the suggestion of Ferla Pras was mooted — which translates as Fairground Meadow.
Cllr Andy Shaw said: “It’s a bit of a mouthful isn’t it?” and noting that it says Fair Park on the map.
But Cllr Philip Lessels, who is also chairman of the Camelford branch of the Old Cornwall Society, said: “The Victorians brought in roundabouts and fairs and up until the 1980s there would have been a fair in that car park. I think it’s a nice name.”
He proposed the council put forward the name suggestion of Ferla Pras. Mayor Cllr Rob Rotchell seconded and the consensus was in favour.
Cllr Rotchell asked cler, Mr Lee Dunkley to record his thanks to Cllr Lessels for carrying out research.
