THE Green Party has entered the contest to choose a new Cornwall Councillor for Launceston’s Central division.

Their candidate is Roger Creagh-Osborne, of Newport, Launceston, who is currently a member of the town council.

Mr Creagh-Osborne moved to Launceston three years ago from South East Cornwall where he was chair of his parish council. He works part time in electronics and computing and has been a green activist for many years, having campaigned on a wide range of issues.

He said: “This is the first time we have stood a Green candidate in Launceston. We know that very many people in the town are frustrated with having to compromise in the past by voting for a greenwash alternative. This time I am offering a genuine green voice, deeply rooted in ecology and understanding that living within our means trumps the obsessive pursuit of growth at all costs.

“We already have one Green councillor on Cornwall Council, by electing a strong green voice for Launceston as well we can start to make a real difference to the direction of the council and help navigate the town and the county through the immensely difficult times ahead. The old solutions no longer work — we need our new green vision to guide us.”

Mr Creagh-Osborne has recently returned from cycling from Truro Cathedral to Paris for the climate talks delivering the Climate Vision report to delegates.

Conservative Val Bugden-Cawsey and Liberal Democrat Gemma Massey have already announced that they will be contesting the seat, which fell vacant with the resignation of Alex Folkes.

Polling takes place on Thursday,?January 14. On the same day, there will be polling for three Launceston?Town Council vacancies in the Central ward.

Members of the public have until midnight on Wednesday, December 23 to register to vote in the by-elections.
