AFTER the votes had been counted at the Parkhouse Centre, Bude, on Thursday evening, June 27, Geoff Waxman, deputy returning officer, announced the result of the election for a councillor to represent the Flexbury and Poughill Ward on Bude-Stratton Town Council, writes Christine Williams.

The results were: TURNER, Lorraine Corrigan (Independent) — 117; HAYNES, Steven (Labour) — 30; PURCHASE, Philippa (Green Party) — 19; UHLIG, Robert (Liberal Democrat) — 350.

Having thanked the returning officer for his conduct of the election, the newly elected Cllr Uhlig said, above all, his task was to represent the residents of Flexbury and Poughill.

However, a green agenda was very important to him and, living in a coastal community, he said ‘we needed to declare a climate emergency’. He wanted a Community Housing Trust to be set up to provide affordable housing for key workers and young families.

With a great interest in education he would campaign for fair funding for local schools.

Among those attending the declaration was Danny Chambers, the prospective Liberal Democrat candidate for North Cornwall. The turn-out was 22.9% and three ballot papers were rejected.
