Sunday, June 14 saw ideal show conditions for pet dogs and their human families at Camelford Agricultural Association's fund raiser at Lower Trewiggett, St Teath. The sun shone and the light breeze kept showers at bay; so everyone enjoyed grass underfoot and fine pastoral views.
The adjacent farmyard (complete with sheds as backup dog rings in case of rain), hosted refreshments and livestock on display for those interested.
Fifteen classes, kindly judged by Ruth from Holt's vets of Camelford, covered a good range of fun titles and hopefully provided several opportunities for each dog. The most popular classes included best pure bred (working/sporting), best cross bred, best condition, handsomest dog, prettiest bitch, (well done to the handler who shall remain anonymous who entered —unnoticed by the judge — the same canine in both classes!) and dog judge would most like to take home.
Also very well supported were the child and junior handler classes, and the fancy dress which a huge amount of effort had gone into, and the results of which were well debated by spectators! A great turnout of entrants (well over 250 entries were taken) were efficiently received by Tony Madge, smoothly coordinated by compare for the day Bob Fox and dog stewards Phil Roose and John Williams. In all, the dog rings had a great family-day-out atmosphere to them which has given organisers much pleasure.
Many thanks were expressed to all the helpers. Hosts for the day Chris and Juliet Cleave manned the guess-the-weight of the sheep competition and escorted onlookers around the cattle shed where a sample of Devon breeding stock were on display.
Sponsorship made a real difference to the day's funds, so many thanks were expressed to all the sponsors, as well as to all those who donated prizes and any other contributions which were very much appreciated.
Preliminary figures are showing a profit in excess of £700, which will be a worthwhile contribution towards the cost of the 2008 washout of Camelford Show. Finally, many thanks went to all those that made it a happy day, particularly the participants and especially the dogs.
