THE Old Bank in Camelford celebrated International Women’s Day in style last Friday evening, with Cornish folk music, pasties and poetry from headline act Vanessa Kisuule.

Celebrations at the Old Bank on Friday, March 8 proved to be a huge success, with over 40 local people attending their first International Women’s Day party.

Up first was Tipple, a band of three with Kate Tidball on violin, her husband John on Irish bouzouki and Brian Poole on djembe drums, who played fantastic Cornish folk music. The second group was Finch, close harmony singers with accompanying guitars and ukulele.

To top off the evening, Bristol-based poet Vanessa Kisuule recited poems old and new, including from her collection A Recipe for Sorcery.

Old Bank chair of trustees, Helen Wood, said: “She was warmly welcomed by the audience who loved not only her poems but also her frank and thoughtful meditations on being British and a woman, and politics and the environment.”

Pasties provided by Cornish Maids went down a treat, and rounded off what was a superb and thought-provoking evening.
