Three graves in Holsworthy cemetery have been vandalised, causing great distress to two local families.
Two ceramic photos were removed from the graves of Nathan and Anthony Orchard, aged 19 and 17, sons of Mr and Mrs Tom Orchard, who died in a road accident just outside Stratton in December 2001 and the glue, which had held the photos in place, was smeared over their names.
It is believed to have occurred at some time between 11am on February 18 and 3.30pm on March 3. A similar incident happened in September 2007.
Another grave, that of Kai Johns, the three year old son of Mr and Mrs Graham Johns of Stratton, who died just three months ago, was also vandalised when a dark green plastic snail with a yellow and orange shell that lights up was taken.
The Mayor of Holsworthy, Cllr Elizabeth Squire said: "It's heartbreaking. I cannot understand such mindless vandalism and the insensitivity of those who commit it."
She appealed to the public to keep a watchful eye and help the police track down those responsible.
PC Amanda Brown said: "These are very disturbing incidents, which have caused more unnecessary distress to the families. I would urge anyone who has any suspicions or information as to who may be responsible to come forward. This can be done anonymously via Crimestoppers or to Holsworthy Police on 08452 777444 email [email protected]">[email protected] quoting log references CH/10/80 (Orchard) or CH/1081 (Johns)."
