On Friday, November 25, freemasons from throughout Cornwall were recently invited to visit the newly opened Cove Macmillan Cancer Support Centre at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.
The centre will provide a dedicated facility for people affected by cancer, whether they are a patient, are caring for someone or are simply worried about cancer. The centre will offer a wide range of services to make sure people with cancer receive support and advice, so they can have the best possible quality of life.
The total cost of the centre was £2.8 million, of which £1 million was raised locally, including in Bude.
The provincial grand master of Cornwall, Stephen Pearn, pledged the support of lodges in the province and, following a huge fundraising effort, a cheque for £75,792 was presented to Macmillan staff at the annual meeting of the province on April 2.
With the work finally finished and the building now open, representatives of each lodge were given a guided tour. The building provides communal and private areas and a great deal of thought has been put into the design, with the welfare and comfort of patients being a priority. The centre provides a calm haven away from the main hospital.
Granville Lodge, in Bude, has fully supported the project with various fundraising events and donations, and the lodge was represented on the visit by Peter reeve, the lodge charity steward.
