THE 1st Camelford Brownies are to benefit from a grant of £300 from the town council towards a trip to London in 2017.

The grant application, submitted by Peggy Ellison, guider, was considered at the council’s meeting on April 19.

The group is planning a trip next year to London, and Peggy said the grant would help to give every Brownie in the unit the opportunity to travel, see interesting sights, and develop a sense of achievement.

She added that it would allow the unit to be inclusive, allowing all Brownies to attend no matter what their financial background is.

Cllr Andy Shaw said: “We as a council have always supported these particular youth activities because of the outlook they have. They do make a great deal of difference to the children.”

Cllr Shaw told his fellow councillors that he helped organise a number of trips a few years ago, and described them as ‘hard work.’

“It was like herding them like chickens!” he added. “They still talk about their trips.”

Cllr Kirsty Ferguson added: “Peggy Ellison, who is running this project, is very supportive of all our events.”

It was proposed by Cllr Shirley Goodman to grant the money. Cllr Claire Hewlett seconded and all councillors voted in favour.

A grant request of £125 to Camelford Scouts was also approved.
