Mail on Sunday Team Classic — With a bye in round one Bude were drawn at home in the second round to Holsworthy, writes Barry Sykes.

The day started with a white golf course so hard was the frost, but with the sun in full force the greens were opened by 8.15 to allow play to commence. Golf was to a very high standard with a vast sprinkling of birdies and the odd eagle thrown in for good measure. Apart from one of the five matches which went to Bude early on the other four pairings saw Holsworthy in command at the 14th. in all matches. Bude's fight back saw all matches go to either the 17th. or last putts on the 18th.

Martin Bell had fought back to all square only to see his opponent birdie the 18th. from 20 feet plus and lose one down. Carrier shot must surely go to Laurie Bridges who was one up going down 17 and giving a shot. He hit a rescue wood from 200 yards out and left the ball four feet from the pin.

In the final match Simon Greatbatch and Ross Daniels had a ding dong battle with pars and birdies the menu of their match .

Results (Bude names first): Martin Bell lost to Ryan Acres 1 down; Dan Balsdon halved with Trevor Tape; Laurie Bridges beat John Bewes 2 up;

Darrell Troop beat Matt Ford 7& 6; Simon Greatbatch beat Ross Daniels 2 up.

Bude 3½, Holsworthy 1½.
