N heavy rain and muddy conditions the Cornish All Blacks dominated on Saturday, scoring four tries to secure a win and a much needed bonus point, writes Suzanne Cleave.
The Blacks started the dominant side, displaying some good tackling and passing, which set up a try in the third minute. They drove on the right in the visitors' 22 and No 8 Sam Hocking burst over on the inside from a ruck. Tony Yapp's conversion swerved through the posts.
The tables soon turned with Nuneaton, who knew about spoiling tactics!, stepping up their game. Launceston found themselves on the defence, close to their line, but a penalty awarded to the home side allowed Yapp to get the ball away.
Both sides seemed to lose momentum part way through the first half, but Launceston held on to maintain their 7-0 lead at half time.
In the second half, The Blacks changed into lime green jerseys and didn't waste any time in adding to their score, with an unconverted try by Ed Lewsey try in the 45th minute. From a scrum and ruck on the Nuneaton 22 Lewsey broke on the openside to run in from 15 yards,
Nuneaton gave away two successive penalties and The Blacks decided to kick for goal with Yapp successfully putting Launceston 15 points ahead.
Two minutes later, it was The Blacks who conceded a penalty and Nuneaton followed suit by going for a kick at goal with Huw Thomas bringing the score to 15-3.
The weather at Polson worsened and play became increasingly difficult, but The Blacks seemed to thrive in the conditions. Yapp converted another penalty in the 66th minute, and the home side's lead was stretched further when replacement Steve Perry kicked towards the wing for Mal Roberts to pick up and power over the line for an unconverted try.
Supporters in the terrace got a close up of the action, when an on pitch scuffle continued on the side lines, which resulted in Nuneaton's James Taylor being sin binned.
The Blacks were awarded another penalty and after kicking for the corner and winning the line-out, the team secured a bonus point when replacement Jamie Salter touched down for a try in the 79th minute, converted again by Yapp.
A good result for The Blacks in atrocious conditions.
