THE cattle ring was brimming with good quality livestock at this year’s Holsworthy & Stratton Agricultural Show, with good representation across the breeds.

This was the final show of the season and people became very competitive.

The Post area was well represented and among the successful entrants were Nigel and Candy Jenkinson from Shebbear with their Diamond Blue Pedigree ‘Magnum’.

By the end of the day he was sporting a fetching champion and reserve rosette having beaten some tough competition.

Showing on behalf of the Jenkinsons, Julie Rooks said: “It’s been a lovely day. There has been some really strong competition with plenty of cattle here today.”

She said it had been a real team effort and her son Dylan, ten, had even chipped in to help. “Dylan has been a really big help today, he has done really well.”

Adding why they had attended the show, Julie said: “We are regulars to this show as it is our local show and it is always great when you see lots of people here that you know.

“It is really a shop window for all of us to show off our cattle.”

Someone else who has finished the showing season off on a high was Lucy James from Holsworthy.

She was showing ‘Tank’ a 13-month-old Limousin x on behalf of John Sluggett.

He has had an ‘up and down’ season bouncing between champion and reserve but Lucy said she was pleased with how he had done.

“It has been nice to finish up with him. He is a young heifer, only 13 months, and was up against some heifers that were bigger and older than him so we can’t complain. He started the season with reserve champion, then got champion at Liskeard, he played up at Launceston so we don’t speak of that show, but went on to take reserve and champion commercial at Camelford and champion today. We have been on a bit of a roll with him.”

Terry and Alison Ruby from Ashwater were also delighted to receive champion and reserve with their Beef Shorthorns in the any other native breed category.

The family was out in full force and the rosettes pile with Terry and Alison being joined by their grand children Harriet and Jack Moon who proved age isn’t everything when they took part in the young handlers’ competition.

Alison said: “It has been a very good day for us and we are especially pleased with how our grandchildren have done — they have done a lot and have been a really good help at the shows this year.”

The Ruby family are quite used to the showing arena but were pleased to support their local show.

Alison said: “We started at Devon County Show then went to Royal Cornwall, Launceston, North Devon Show and Okehampton. We always try and support this show because it is only 15 minutes away from our home and we always say there is no point doing this if you can’t support your local show.”
