PLANS to open a Wetherspoon pub in Liskeard town centre are one step closer to fruition with the submission of a full application to Cornwall Council's planning department.

The pub chain hopes to demolish the old fuel station buildings on the Taylors Garage site in Barras Street and build a two-storey building with a first-floor terrace area and enclosed beer garden.

Wetherspoon says the building will be 'subservient to surrounding structures,' and in harmony with its surroundings.

Concerns have been raised over the height of the new pub, which is to be built next to the Grade II listed Stuart House.

Liskeard Town Council is encouraging local people to view the Wetherspoon plans and give their comments on the designs, either by popping into Stuart House or by visiting http://www.planliskeard">www.planliskeard.

The short survey is available to complete until June 9. Feedback from residents will inform the town council's discussion of the application at planning committee next month, said Neighbourhood Plan working group chairman Rachel Brooks.

Following a consultation event at the site last Saturday, Councillor Brooks said that around 50 people had viewed the plans.

'Most people wanted us to know that they thought it was good that Wetherspoon is coming to Liskeard,' she said.

'A number of people said they thought the designs were fine, some thought it doesn't fit in terribly well with the street scene as it is. The biggest concern is on the height of the building, compared to surrounding buildings.'

'People also feel that local materials should be used,' she added.

A spokesperson for the pub chain said: 'As always, Wetherspoon is as keen as ever to open one of its pubs in Liskeard. We would be willing to hear the views of local residents and the council, however, we would not wish to commit ourselves to anything specific at this stage.'
