ST Tudy Garden Produce Association’s Annual Open Summer Show was held on Saturday, August 11 in the Village Hall which, as usual, looked lovely.

Mr J Godden from St Kew judged the vegetables, Mr M Hawken from Wadebridge the flowers, and Mrs A Copus from St Kew Highway judged the floral art.

Despite entries being down and the extraordinary weather we’ve had, they said the standard at the show was one of the best they’d seen so far.

Mike Armstrong excelled in the veg classes — his collection (including some perfect cauliflowers) was awarded the Dick Lamerton Cup; his stand of 24 onions gave him the M E L Williams Cup for best exhibit in veg section, the Sam Cotton Memorial Trophy for best onion exhibits and the Lamerton Memorial Cup for best vegetable or flower exhibit in the show. Not surprisingly, he also won the cup for most points in vegetables, with Peggy Metters taking the runner-up cup.

Meanwhile, in the flower sections, Ivy Bastard took the honours — well, you only have to see the outside of her house to understand why! It’s a picture this year! She received the cup for best flower exhibit with a stunning stem of gladiolus, the Ron Skyner Cup for best fuchsia exhibit, the Dray Memorial Cup for most points in sections one to 58 and F and M Hillson Memorial Cup for most points in flower section.

Sue Dibble won runner-up cup in the flower section — a close run thing with Di Bartlett , but Sue had more ‘firsts’ than Di! However, Di did win the John Stone Cup for most points in pot plants outright!

In floral art Judith Jasper gained most points and won the Millennium Cup while Jane King’s foliage arrangement gained her the Dulcie Denny Cup for best exhibit in floral art.

Whilst there were a few more entries in some classes, organisers would really like some more competition! And sadly, this time there were no junior entries — probably all the children are enjoying their summer holidays.

Ryan Metters presented the trophies to the winners, thanking everyone who helped make the show possible — Peggy, Jane, Val, Linda, Bob and John.

The next event is the first of their winter meetings (yes, really!) on Monday, October 15 in the Village Hall when they have John Price coming to tell them about Great Gardens of Cornwall. They hope to see you there at 7.30pm.
