THE future ownership of Bude Sea Pool was recently discussed at Bude-Stratton’s latest full council meeting on Thursday, August 4.

Cllr Paul Tilzey, who is also chairman of the Friends of Bude Sea Pool, presented the options of the sea pool’s future to his fellow town councillors at the recent meeting.

There, he explained that there is the potential to change the lease of the sea pool, meaning the town council could possibly own it, rather than Cornwall Council, if the town council decided to take on that lease.

Cllr Tilzey told the council: “Our finances are healthy; we currently have £100,000 in the bank, in case anything was to happen to the sea pool. We also have £40,000 presently and a further £80,000 set aside for future repairs.

“Is the town happy for the county council to hold the lease? It seems wrong that people are holding the lease, because it always used to be the towns.”

However, a few councillors seemed concerned over the prospect of changing the lease. Cllr Peter Moores said: “I’d say don’t get it wrong because I think the work Bude Sea Pool does is fantastic.

“We recognise the work and achievements of Friends of Bude Sea Pool, and I don’t wish to take on the ownership and lease of Bude Sea Pool.”

Cllr Frank Partridge said: “In the event of a catastrophe, Cornwall Council would look for negotiation. At the moment, we’re in a strong position to negotiate. I would rather you carry on doing what you’re doing.”

Mayor of Bude-Stratton, Cllr Lea Deely added: “When push comes to shove, we’re in a good negotiating position.”

The councillors then discussed reviewing the ownership of the lease in five years time.

Cllr Tilzey said: “The pot building could become quite significant, and maybe then we could take it on.”
