LAUNCESTON YFC recently took part in a sponsored walk in aid of their chosen charities, CLIC Sargent and Cornwall Air Ambulance.

The members started their walk at St Petroc’s Church, Padstow, on Saturday, April 2, at 9.30am, setting off along the Saints Way in the wind and rain, whilst tackling some challenging terrain.

After 28 miles of walking, the group arrived at St Fimbarrus Church in Fowey, on Sunday afternoon. They hope to have raised nearly £1,000 to be shared between their two chosen charities. Previously, an annual dung run raised over £800 for the same charities.

In March, members took part in the South West area competitions weekend in Weymouth. This saw around 25 members spending the whole weekend in Weymouth, attending various competitions and parties.

Around this time, the group participated in the dancing competition, Show Choir and Member of the Year competitions at South West level. Launceston gained a well-earned second place in the dancing, but it was Devon who won. Oliver Stephens, club chairman, took part in the Member of the Year competition after winning the Cornwall round, achieving third place. Finally, the Show Choir competition saw the group coming joint first place with Devon, with both teams going ahead to the national finals in Blackpool on May 8.

Hannah Gribble was also recognised for her participation in the Cornwall debating team, coming second in the South West area competition and coming third in the Southern round at Hartbury College.

Informative talks and activities have also taken place recently, with Scott Mann, the Conservative MP for North Cornwall, giving a talk on how he got into politics, his journey to becoming an MP, and the EU referendum.

There was a talk with businesspeople talking about their working lives and their progress, all helping to inspire the group.

Regarding sports, eight members of Launceston YFC recently helped East Cornwall win 19-0 in the East vs. West Cornwall rugby match at Camborne. Other club nights included swimming, martial arts and a ten-pin bowling night.

There has also been a recent visit to the new Mole Valley store in Holsworthy, where the group were given a brief history and tour of the company; and a wine and wisdom evening took place with Simon Burden as the quiz master.
