A SERIES of events have been set in motion at Sir James Smith’s Community School, Camelford, in a bid to buy a Shelterbox.
The Cornish-based charity supply aid to those in desperate need of emergency shelter.
The brainchild of a group of Year 10 students, the fund-raising bid began in earnest with a series of assemblies, held to inform the rest of the school of their intention to buy a box for over £500 and then track it as it is used for disaster relief.
Events, aimed to bring in the necessary money, include a ‘non-uniform day’ where students pay £1 to come into school in their ‘normal’ clothes, washing staff cars and donating coins for use in mathematics lessons before they are added to the final total.
The contents of a Shelterbox were demonstrated during the assemblies, and the tent from the box was put on display in the school’s Learning Resource Centre.
Among the Year 10 representatives launching the fundraising were Ollie Sandercock, Lewis Bradley, Sam Richards, Lauren Brocklehurst, Isla Symons and Bryony Davis.
