THE primary school at St Teath is about to see a significant expansion.
Cornwall Council has agreed to fund the building of two new classrooms on the school site.
St Teath is one of a number of schools in Cornwall, which have been identified by the council as being under significant pressure for school places.
The council has received approximately £32-million from the Government as part of its Education Basic Need Capital allocations for 2015/2017 to help meet this pressure and is using this funding to provide additional places where they are most needed.
Headteacher Lee Bacchus said the school has been oversubscribed and overcrowded for several years with the school hall having to be used as a classroom to accommodate all the children.
One of the new classrooms will be used to house the class currently based in the hall and the other to accommodate the new class that has been created by the growing number of children coming to the school.
Mr Bacchus added: "Our pupil admission number for this year was ten children in each year group. Nearly every year group is at or above this number.
"The new classroom space means our pupil admission number can increase to 15 in each year group from September and we will have a new Reception class of 20 children.
"For the first time in many years, we will have spaces in nearly every year group for children wishing to attend St Teath from September.
"During the past year we have been faced with the unpleasant task of having to tell parents that we did not have a space for their child even though they wanted to move here. We hope that, for the next year at least, we will not be in that position."
